In January, the National Retail Federation announced a new retail training and credentialing program called RISE Up (Retail Industry Skills & Education). The program is a collaboration between retailers and nonprofits to help potential employees develop the needed skills to get entry level jobs in retail and advance in the industry. The venture is intended to benefit not only workers, but retailers who find it a challenge to fill positions with qualified applicants for both entry level and management positions.

RISE Up starts with a 15-module program known as Retail Industry Fundamentals. RIF is designed to provide training in areas such as retail tools and technologies, customer service, retail math, inventory, and interview skills. The training can be offered online or in a formal classroom setting and is available for current employees, as well as those new to retail. For more information, visit www.nrf.com/riseup.
