Handmade items are a great addition to a gift business’ inventory thanks to their uniqueness and potential for customization. According to a recent Small Business Trends post by Tabby McFarland, seven items are consistently top sellers in the handmade category and worth stocking on your shelves:
1. Handmade Jewelry
Unique designs made from a wide range of materials make each piece special.
2. Tufted Rugs and Mats
Fiber arts products like tufted rugs and mats created using the hooking or tufting methods, add a little “something extra” to a home. These products are among the biggest sellers at craft fairs and gift shops that carry handmade items.
3. Seasonal Wreaths
Customers love wreaths because they add a festive finishing touch to an entryway or wall. They love them even more when they are made with some natural ingredients like twigs, shells, greenery, or pinecones. Add fun embellishments like ribbon, bells, or silk flowers and you have a surefire winner at any time of year.
4. Personalized Candles
Candles are a popular choice because they are relatively easy to make and offer tons of creative potential, from scents to labels to fun names. Tailor your offerings to seasons, special occasions, or unique restorative properties (such as lavender or vanilla for calm and relaxation, or citrus for energy) to broaden their appeal.
5. Macrame Wall Hangings
With different patterns, materials, and techniques, textile art like macrame adds a personal touch to any home. Makers new to the art of macrame should focus on learning the basic knots (square and lark’s head), then move on to more sophisticated styles.
6. Upcycled Furniture
There is still a strong demand for upcycled furniture and home goods made from repurposed materials. These products are better for the environment and are great conversation starters for guests in a customer’s home.
7. Decorative Pillows
Pillows are popular because they are an inexpensive way to change up a home’s décor to reflect a holiday, season, or mood. Bohemian patterns, geometric shapes, and seasonal designs are among the bestsellers in this category.
Take the love of handmade a step further and invite makers into your store to teach one-hour classes or longer workshops on different techniques to create another revenue stream for your business.
